Hello. It is February 2023. What is special about February? It is Black History Month. Our school is involved in the recognition and celebration of important individuals this month. We focus on Black History Month and planning for PSD celebrations in numerous ways. We know that this month is recognized in different ways everywhere. PSD does have a history of partnering with PCBDA, the Philadelphia Chapter of Black Deaf Advocates. PCBDA and PSD have something in common. PSD is the third oldest school for the Deaf in the country. PCBDA is the third oldest chapter of their national organization, NBDA, National Black Deaf Advocates. We are each respectively the third oldest of our kind. We have worked together for a number of years and typically share in inviting a speaker to come present to the school on Friday and then stay that Saturday for PCBDA’s meeting. PCBDA and PSD are thrilled to announce this year’s Black History Month speaker. His name is Vyron Kinson and he is from Atlanta Georgia. Vyron has a Master‘s Degree in Sign Language Education from Gallaudet University. He owns a business called ASL Diagnostic Service. He also works full-time as a Lead ASL Teacher at The Howard School (THS) in addition he works part-time as an ASL Instructor at Georgia State University. He also does freelance work as a Deaf Interpreter and Language Expert.

Vyron also gives his time. Currently he serves in a volunteer role as the President of the Georgia chapter of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (GARID).

You can see the numerous reasons why we selected him and have asked him to come. He will present to the school for our students and staff and also be with PCBDA the next day. He will be here Friday February 24th at the school and Saturday February 25th with PCBDA.

Typically we have a Spaghetti Dinner and Dessert Auction as a part of that Black History Month celebration and weekend. He will be here with our students and staff that evening if you’d like to meet him. That is a fundraiser that we host annually for our families and it is a wonderful event. We look forward to having Vyron as our guest speaker on February 24th. He will spend time during the day on campus as well as be with us that night.

That is our update for Black History Month. We want to take time to join in the national recognition of Black History Month and also note it is important not to limit it to just one month. We want to spend time throughout the year recognizing the importance of individuals’ contributions including our staff and community. All of our departments are recognizing this month in different ways so we are all partaking in the celebration. More information next month. Thank you.
